• Wayne suggests having a shavings bed on 'semi deep-litter', ie. keeping a shallow layer of saturated bed at the base (underneath the dry bedding) to offer extra protection, especially to large horses, when they lie down and get up. This, he says, avoids capped hocks and other injuries (even though his stables have rubber matting underneath the bed).
• Wayne also recommends your rubber mats fit snuggly, to avoid pee getting underneath them which will make the stable smell!
• He suggests 3 stages to mucking out. First of all, remove all the pooh. Wayne uses a shavings fork for this but some people wear rubber gloves and use their hands.
• Secondly, scrape back the dry bedding in the main part of the stable to reveal the core wet areas underneath. Then remove the most prominent wet but leave a thin layer of saturated bed (dark in colour).
• Third, use a pitch fork to go through the banks and fluff them up. Then bring some of the clean bedding from the banks back down to form the top layer of the main bed in the centre of the stable. Level off the top of the banks for neatness and sweep up the floor which is not bedded, usually the front of the stable where horse eats and drinks.
• Wayne adds about 2 new bales of shavings to each stable per week.
