About this video
How do you make a 'dry and dusty' subject such as mucking out come to life? You ask a 3* event rider, hunt groom (and hilarious Horse Hero blogger) to demonstrate the fine art! Wayne takes us through his three stages of mucking out a shavings bed to create 'Ritz' standard accommodation for his horses who, he says 'work hard enough for us, so it's the least we can do for them'. Watch and learn! You could become as anally obsessed as Wayne in his quest to produce the perfect bed!

Wayne Garrick's method of mucking out a shavings bed

  • Wayne suggests having a shavings bed on 'semi deep-litter', ie. keeping a shallow layer of saturated bed at the base (underneath the dry bedding) to offer extra protection, especially to large horses, when they lie down and get up. This, he says, avoids capped hocks and other injuries (even though his stables have rubber matting underneath the bed).
  • Wayne also recommends that rubber mats fit snuggly, to avoid pee getting underneath them which will make the stable smell!

freya23 24 Aug 2011 I am glad a lot of other people are completely obsessive! I get so many comments on my mucking out from the yard owner! She said she is going to get me binoculars for my birthday to get every speck of pooh! Is has to be perfect every day or I feel bad.
aliwade 13 Feb 2011 He is not 'anal' or obsessive. There is no other way to muck out a shavings bed. Like him, I was trained to the highest of standards, and I actually sit down in the stable (I can't bend down) with rubber gloves and a muck skip and get every tiny piece of poo out (very satisfying!). Square banks are the way to go. Ali xx
pennyw454 2 Feb 2011 So glad I'm not the only one - the bed looks great!!
Boysan 9 Jan 2011 I thought that was hilarious. After getting into a steamy sweat mucking out my stalls this morning (it's summer here) this video gave me a good laugh. I have the opposite problem to most. My horses leave piles of poo - easy to find and remove, but when they pee, they walk it all through the shavings!! I always feel that I have to through so much out because I'm obsessive about leaving any wet bedding. Like everyone, I stand back and feel a great sense of achievement when I've finished :-) I'd love to teach them to use one corner, but in Australia we don't really see badger diggings. Any other suggestions?

I thought OCD for a perfect stable was just me!!! I have to get every bit of poo I cannot leave a little bit which is stupid I know, but I like my bed to be perfect. Banks straight and patted down and the main floor all level and neat and tidy. Then my horse goes in and trashes!!! Hey ho! I used to muck out for a woman who would only pay by the stable if the bed was not up to her exacting standards she would not pay! You soon become obsessed!
