We get to grips with endurance basics on the first day of the Golden Horseshoe Ride on a windswept Exmoor. With gusts of wind up to 50 miles per hour, the weather is considered good but it's not so great for filming! We find out what type of tack is used, and meet chief vet Jo Woodman who explains how vettings work and the type of horse health issues she sees on such a demanding ride. Fiona Price meets Horse Hero blogger Nikki Routledge and Daisha, who she says is an 'adrenaline junky'. Nikki tells us why she keeps coming back to the Horseshoe Ride, what type of training she does and shows us Daisha's fabulous go-faster hairdo!

trinnywinny 24 Aug 2009 Fabulous, how inspiring I really want to do this. I can't think of a better way to enjoy your horse and nature, just need to get fit! But what a goal for horse and rider to aim for and achieve.

Karen Jones 29 May 2009 Thought this was brilliant! Really good to hear about the technical stuff. Makes you realise just how much endurance involves. I am sure that eventers in particular, would benefit from the endurance training we put on our horses.

Fiona Price 28 May 2009 I found the Golden Horseshoe (my first experience of endurance) to be a great eye opener into a completely different equestrian sport. I am amazed there isn't more cross fertilisation between disciplines which would enable us to use the best ideas of sports outside our own regards the training and care of our horses. It is certainly one of our intentions with Horse Hero to achieve greater cross discipline awareness!
