Hi, can anyone advise what to give my horse for hair loss. My vet recomended Farriers formula but is there anything cheaper that has the same things in it?
My friend went to plait his tail the other day and it was falling out by the roots. He looks so healthy otherwise and has a good diet , just something missing somewhere. I imported him from Spain 2 years ago and the underneath of his mane was missing,I presumed his last owner had pulled it all out but it has never grown back.

NAF biotin with the MSM and zinc has the same effective ingredients as FF.

You can also try rubbing cornucrescine or MegaTek into the roots- that promotes hair growth as does the massage bit.

If it's falling out by the roots, is he too warm? Or maybe something else is going on- maybe a blood test would shed some light on it?

Edited to add, have you put anything on him recently that has irritated him? Maybe it's a contact allergy- some horses are allergic to citranella or silicone which is found in most horsey hair products.

Hi Lary Mary

I agree with what Kempshills says.

Remember that the hair you can see on your horse is already dead. If it starts to grow then the hair follicles are functioning. If you want it to grow long and strong then you are going to have to improve the rate at which it grows and protect what is growing.

The only way in which you can increase the growth rate is to make sure that your horse is receiving a balanced diet. I think that your best way may be to make sure that the horse’s diet includes a good vitamin supplement. The vitamins and minerals usually associated with good hair growth include vitamin B-6, biotin, magnesium and zinc. Farriers Formula is a good supplement but is expensive, so you may want to look at a cheaper one that is properly balanced.

To maintain the hair that is growing be very careful how you look after it – gentle massage will stimulate blood supply and growth, but brushing will also pull out the hair, so you have to tread a fine line with what you do.

As with your own hair, avoid strong chemicals or detergents, but keep the tail clean using plain water.

Have you been using a rug with a tail flap through the winter? This may have been rubbing the tai and will be harbouring grease, sweat and dirt that will damage the growing hair.

Good luck
