my 11 year old gelding has a small cut on the inside back leg. This has ulcerated and now ,oddly a day later, he has another on his right shoulder. We have had the vet out so he has been given antibiotics, also we are cleaning and bandaging the leg . The ulcers are small [2 cms] but i am interested to know if there may be some underlying cause of this , the vet thinks they are coincidental. But it does seem strange to get two within two days on different parts of the body.

you don't say if he is out at grass or stabled, either way, i would be looking for a supplement to support the skin/immune system, i know supplements are expensive, but i tend to use them when something needs attention as it is cheaper than vet bills.

Hi Diana

You say that the ulcers are 2cm across, but how deep are they? Are they getting bigger? Are they dry or wet?

Since your vet has already been involved in the treatment I suggest that you contact them again and tell them about the changes then continue to follow their advice.

Antibiotics should clear up any viral cause for your horse’s ulcers, but will do nothing if the cause is bacterial.

As to why he has gained a new one, it may be that your horse had a chew at one of them and spread any infection between them.

There are several creams on the market that claim to heal wounds (and ulcers) more quickly, so you could try one of those, but generally keeping the wound covered will help keep it clean and moist but may actually delay the healing as the wound never gets a chance to dry. If you want to use something then many people find pure honey is a very good treatment for wounds that will not heal.

Good nutrition always helps, so make sure that your horse is receiving a good balanced diet. There is always a risk that if you feed a supplement designed to satisfy some needs that you end up unbalancing the diet and causing more problems, so try to maintain a healthy balance using an all round supplement.

I hope that the problem clears up soon
