Hi - has anyone out there purchased a rug for a foal born to a 16hh mare and 16.2 sire? I wanted to get something prior to my mare foaling but have no idea of what size to get.
Mare is ID cross (middleweight) - sire is Trekehner.
Any ideas?

I would not think you need a rug for your foal unless there is a problem with it, so I would not go shopping yet – if you are desperate to buy something, how about a nice foal slip?
With regard to guessing the size of a new foal, that is virtually impossible – could you guess the size of a human baby given that Mum is 5 foot 4 and Dad is 5 foot 6?
Perhaps we could start a competition to guess how large your foal is when it is born.
Good luck and enjoy your foal

Might be a bit late now but you can get nice foal rugs from WEBS - see www.breedingsupplies.co.uk - I got a turnout and a thermatex type rug for my boy (16.2.mare 16.3 stallion)- 9 weeks later outgrown - but initially turn out too big so had to put a stitch in! only really relevant if foal bit weak (thermatex rug ) or for the first month or so if weather bad - ie turnout rug foals not born waterproof.
