Hello everyone,
Im thinking of doing BYEH on my 5 year old next year, he has olympic / grand prix showjumping breeding, he absolutly brilliant on the flat shoulder in/leg yeild/half pass and startecd piaffe, havent done much jumping as hes learning how to control and balance his canter. His conformation isn't brilliant slightly pidgeon toed but is having corrective shoeing and doesnt bother his but how much will this be held against him ? What makes the " ultimate 3day eventer?" how easy is it to quailify? is the competition tough? Im not a eventer and if to make it to the finals do i even stand a chance if my name's not oliver townsend , ruth edge or such like ?? Thankyou

Hi,
I have only done a couple of BYEH so don't have much experience at it myself. But the way it goes is you do a relatively straightforward dressage test - 5 year old have to show some lengthened trot, straight onto the jumping - I think 5 year olds jump 1m in qualifiers and 1.10m in the finals which includes a couple of xc fences I think. Then you do the conformation part. The dressage is marked out of 35, jumping out of 40 and the conformation out of 15. The top 10 then go in the ring and are given a mark for their suitability etc and have to show a gallop - this is out of 10. I had a horse once who wasn't really an event type she was much more of a showjumper and she had the highest jumping mark but was marked quite low on everything else and she was still placed but didn't qualify. So it would be possible to qualify if your dressage and jumping were good enough to make up for the marks that might be deducted for the pigeon toes etc. Not everyone who does well in them is a 'name'!! It is really a showing class and someone's opinion - I know of horses that did these classes and were told they wouldn't make event horses and they went on to win big 3days etc and also vice versa some horses do well and don't go on to event. Hope this is of some help!
