What a special horse! I have a vivid memory of his incredible XC round near the end of the eventing competition at the Hong Kong Olympics. It was daring, bold and brilliant in the rain and on difficult terrain. Equally etched in my memory is Mary's resilience and radiant smile. But now, she must be utterly devastated!! My heart goes out to her. Cavalier was a horse that mixed joy and tragedy. He lost Caroline and now Mary has lost him!

MY HEART GOES OUT TO MARY KING.THE ATMOSTPHERE AFTER THE FALL WAS HEART BREAKING AND I DON'T THINK THERE WAS A DRY EYE ANY WHERE. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS THOUGHT OF THE EXPRESS EVENTING. I THOUGHT THE CROSS COUNTRY SECTION WAS ASKING TOO MUCH?

There is a thread in the eventing forum called Express Eventing Disappointment. You can see other people's views there, which broadly agree with your own.

I am so upset, he was a total schoolmaster with so much experience, I think it just shows up what a shambles the day was, I hope the organisers learn their lesson.

The problem I have after watching the Express Eventing a couple of times is there is no rest and recovery period for the horse or rider.. even One Day Events allow for a rest period and this is where things turned pear shaped, they are asking too much to do a round of show jumping then high pressure cross country, what they need to do is allow time between the S/J and X/C so the horse has time to catch a breath, some of the horses appeared to be quite tired, they are exceptional athletes but to do dressage then so many jumps under pressure is just too much, either express eventing needs to change or there is a different type of fitness that the sport demands and it will take time to bring horses up to the current expectations! Lets make the adjustments (fewer jumps in both disciplines and / or rest period) go out and enjoy our horses, we don't need to keep pushing them because if it becomes a year round sport where horses are expected to do big tracks Express Eventing type tracks in the winter as well as compete in the usual way the rest of the time, it runs the risk of making eventing look as though its becoming a blood sport, which it is not - we can't have it both ways!
I am so sorry for Mary's loss, sadly a hard lesson for all riders in all disciplines. Keep truckin Mary!

I think course designers and event organisers should be much more 'horse friendly' these days. It is not an easy job, I know, but we put them out there, so more responsible should be taken for their safety. Call Again Cavalier was a wonderful horse, RIP.

I've heard this a few times but I don't actually know is he still alive and injured or was it worse?

I don't think that the course designers did anything wrong! I dont want this to sound harsh and I am sad that he had to be put down, but everyone thinks that express eventing is bad when it isn't. All that happened was a really good horse had to be put down but that happens all the time in racing and sometimes on the cross country course!
