I've just found out a mare I bought at the end of last year is actually in foal, and I had no idea until recently! I've watched the breeding videos, but they dont't seem to cover the actual pregnancy. It would be really useful for some info on how to look after the mare well, things to watch for etc. :)

Hi Julz

Well that must have been a bit of a shock! I hope that you are not too upset by the change in plans for your new horse and that you have all the facilities and time to care for a youngster.

You don’t say when your mare is due to foal or how old she is, but generally in-foal mares do not require too much special treatment – it is the owners who tend to worry most!

You need to ensure that your mare is fed a good balanced diet, but do not allow her to get fat.

Most mares can continue to work well in to their pregnancy, although as the foal becomes large it will make fast work and jumping difficult as the size of the foal gets in the way of her organs (and makes the saddle fit somewhat difficult). A relatively fit mare will have a healthier foal, so make sure that she gets plenty of exercise out in the field rather than standing in a stable for long hours.

Good luck – I hope that you breed a lovely foal

I will add this subject to our very long list of video ideas. We are filming shortly at Lynne Crowden's Woodlander stud so if we can cover it there we will.

In a similar boat myself - found out my mare was pregnant at vetting but went ahead with purchase anyway. Due sometime in the next few weeks - fingers crossed all will go well!

Thanks that would be great! She's only 4 this year and is due in roughly a month. She's out in the field all day so is getting plenty of exercise, especially as she came cantering down the hill towards me today! I don't have too much experience with foals but thankfully at a very experienced BHS yard and they have bred about 4 of their own, so plenty of help at hand and the vet is happy with her too.
My only real concern now is that she's been covered by a big horse.. she's barely 14.2hh, and at the moment the only stallion we know she's been around is a showjumper of Dermot Lennon's. I'm a bit worried she might struggle as she's getting pretty huge now! But again plenty of help around so fingers crossed everything runs smoothly!

The new foal video was much appreciated! Got a lovely chestnut colt last week :)
