About this video

Stephen Clarke is an Olympic and List One dressage judge. He has ridden at Grand Prix and was reserve for the 1988 Olympics. He is a also a renowned trainer. Fiona Price caught up with Stephen at the National Dressage Champs '09 to find out his views on a number of contentious dressage topics. Stephen tells us he believes judges should have sufficient competition experience to know what it's like for the riders they are judging. He talks about the need to professionalise the sport by paying judges, the wider impact of medal glory at the European Champs', plus we find out about Stephen's training philosophy.

LADISLAO 9 Dec 2010 Congratulations for the British Horse Society Queen´s Award 2010. You have done a lot for Dressage. Again Congrats from Spain.
LadyJennivieve 4 Oct 2010 We also pay our dressage judges in Australia. I think the going rate is $50, but you also pay for them to get to the venue and then you feed and water them for the day/s and also pay for any accomodation for a two day event. We also have rules about coaches judging their students or any horses they have an interest in. You also can't board a judge with a competitor. But you're welcome to chat to them during the competition when they're on break about their training views and what they look for in the arena. Strange, but true.
Pegasus77 19 Oct 2009 What a pleasure to hear Stephen talking in such a relaxed way about what concerns us all who judge. More please from other top level judges would be very good.
christina 19 Oct 2009 Lovely interview & a very interesting point about paying judges. I was amazed on my travels in the US to meet people who judged for a living, in fact one lady was giving up working as a school teacher because she was earning more from judging!
María 19 Oct 2009 Thanks Fiona, I am a judge of Argentine, it is a pleasure to hear Stephen Clarke. Antonia Indart
