About this video

A year on from the first video of Joey, top British dressage rider Laura works on the 5 year old's warmup in preparation for simple changes and more collection. Joey can be a little tricky to begin with so he determines the length of the warmup. Laura demonstrates exercises to get him to relax and 'let go', including riding walk-trot transitions with some bend. She also gives some tips on straightness. Laura creates hind leg activity from the start as she says this is a prerequisite for a good connection later. Frequent walk breaks are vital, and walking on a free rein encourages over-tracking. Laura provides a great explanation of her aids.

Nikikolas 6 Apr 2011 Laura shows just that! These are the early stages to get acceptance of the contact, supple/loosness, and throughness. It takes time and tact to develop light/easy/secure contact. Some of those methods are shown here. Nothing is held or forced, merely gymnastisized. Fab vid!
FlyingChangesJessica 9 Mar 2011 I agree with SCMSL - that would be brilliant!
SCMSL 11 Dec 2010 Hi! One of these days, could you make a video addressing how to establish an equal and stable contact on the young horse? Thank you!
Racheal 16 Nov 2010 My now 5yr old Diamond Hit sometimes doesn't want to go with the hind end, slow reaction time. How much does Laura address this? Is it something that is a constant in the training/age or does she expect it at the backing stage? I had a trainer flip the reins at my boy on his neck/mane to get him to pay attention to the aid. But he developed the big under neck muscle after just that one ride. I was just curious for any insight.
freckels 19 Sep 2010 Thanks fiona, will have a look.
