About this video

The three year old stallion Fleetwood Mac (owned by Lynne Crowden and the Eilbergs) is ridden for the third time at Woodlander Stud. Lynne's Bereiter Carsten Sandrock explains why he begins on the lunge. Lynne talks about the importance of using two people for the exercise and how division of labour keeps it simple for the horse. Carsten remains cool when dealing with some unexpected exuberance. When he gets on Mac he begins on the lunge in walk, and once loose he uses two helpers to keep the horse moving forwards. Mac demonstrates willingness in all paces. This is an essential video on backing and starting youngsters.

woodlander 30 Nov 2010 This stage of the horses training lasts only for a couple of days and is no more alarming for the horse than the use of any aid. We use the whip on the lunge and we then use it in exactly the same quiet way when the horse goes loose and large. No cracking the whip only encouraging the horse in the direction we require. It looks hectic because the horse is going forward and this is the primary aim of this stage. If we would try and steer the horse onto the track with the hand or the leg this would not yet be meaningful. The important thing with starting a horse is the continuance of the communication gradually migrating one method to another with no sudden changes.
gravitygirl 30 Nov 2010 I'm not sure the horse really needed to be spurred on as much as it was by the loung whips. There were moments when I think the assistants could have just stood still and the horse would have continued forward on it's own with out the spooking episodes. For it's third ride the whole show was very impressive. Its true he had a good pup, but a good pup horse could kill you in a second if pushed too fast too soon. A wonderful show of trust on this horses part and good handleing by Carston. Bravo
RAD 22 Sep 2010 Not so keen on two helpers with whips - I've never found such driving assistance necessary and this horse didn't seem to be an exception.
marydoll 2 Aug 2010 I have to say that I loved this video, I saw a lovely horse starting his education in a positive, constructive, understanding way. I would be happy to have my horse backed and ridden on by Carsten in this manner. I look forward to seeing many more videos of this type, thank you!
dressage111 22 Jul 2010 Agree whole-heartedly with JoT. I recently bought a 3 year old that had spent 6 weeks at the breaker and didn't work half as well as this horse when I picked him up. Fleetwood Mac is a baby, he made some errors, just as you would expect for someone who has had three attempts at being ridden. Its hard work and hard to balance when all of a sudden 80kg is added to your back!! Certainly didn't look worried at the end of work, walking on a loose rein with no contact and happy ears.
