About this video

Tricks trainer and performer Rosie Howard from Jive Pony teaches Aristo, a young unbroken stallion a few tricks. Aristo quickly learns to kiss, cross his legs and shake his head, on demand. Rosie says it's about using your imagination and that of your horse, creating a strong association between a cue and an action, then repetition, consistency, patience and reward! According to Rosie, "tricks are a great way to enjoy your horse and enhance your relationship with him; they are also a clever way to get focused quickly when you need to at a show!" Rosie demonstrates the fully trained tricks on her obliging youngster Caspar!

horse web site 6 Jan 2012 I can't wait to try out some of these tricks. My daughter's horse is a natural clown so we'll have to give it a go.
Costy 28 May 2011 I've abandoned crossing in favour of spanish walk, he's picking that up nicely!
Fiona Price 27 May 2011 Rosie did mention in the video that you need to find the behaviours your horse is inclined to naturally, reinforce and develop them to turn them into tricks. The things that are not so natural will be harder but I guess, not impossible with patience!
Costy 27 May 2011 I have a knabstrupper gelding, traditionally used in circuses, so you would think teaching tricks wouldn't be hard- he's very trainable under staddle, but on the floor, is a different story!! I'm trying to teach him the cross legs trick. He finds it very difficult to cross the legs with me placing the leg, and prefers to wave it about! He's now cracked that lifting the leg when I tickle the elbow gets him a treat, but I'm now struggling with grabbing a waving forleg and crossing it when he doesn't particularly want to. Tell me there's hope and you've dealt with this before?
YankeeSweet 20 Mar 2011 I liked the two of you doing the Spanish Walk. Reminded me of that TV skit with the 'Deptment of Silly Walks' a long time ago....
