About this video

Classical dressage trainer Francisco de Braganca works in hand with his Advanced six year old Lusitano stallion. "Ground work is the best preparation for riding" says Francisco, who demonstrates his training method combining a cavesson and a bridle. Moving the stallion with a hand on the shoulder and using a traditional Portuguese stick behind the girth, Franciso creates an understanding of bend, simulates a light contact with the mouth as well as leg pressure. He shows lateral moves including shoulder-in and travers on a straight line and on a circle, plus leg-yield and the start of half-pass. He also stresses the use of voice.

antoinette 9 Jul 2010 A lovely video! I agree that working a horse on the ground helps to develop the correct muscles and technique for when they work under saddle. My horse strugggled with reinback and used to be halfhearted in leg yielding, but after doing a lot of groundwork he now reins back with the lightest touch!
mariamarquise 7 Jul 2010 I can't find anyone to teach this stuff in this country! As always, HorseHero comes to my rescue - thank you, Fiona!
Adastra 4 Jul 2010 I agree; when ridden half pass is asked for the horse is already familiar and comfortable with the movement and has practised the coordination necessary to move smoothly from one position to another. I do hope we'll get the chance to follow his progression - this is a wonderful video, thank you HH & Francisco.
Fiona Price 4 Jul 2010 In fairness, I would say the horse shows the start of half pass in hand, not the finished item. Having seen it close up, it looks very difficult to get the flexion going away from you with the rein in one hand on the top of the neck, while you walk with the horse and push his inside shoulder away with the other hand. It probably felt more half pass to Francisco than it looked, as he couldn't see the whole picture.
back2front 4 Jul 2010 Hi. I love in-hand work and the value it has in training. However the horse didn't appear to be properly bent in the direction of travel when it was described as doing a half pass.
