About this video

4* eventer Flora Harris takes 6 year old Barney cross country schooling for the first time. In the warm-up, the emphasis is on Barney thinking forwards. Flora works around the jumps, then approaches in trot to allow Barney time to read each fence. Repetition builds confidence. Flora says, "the rider must be secure in the leg and soft in the contact, to remain in balance whatever happens". To jump a small ditch, Flora approaches in walk. As Barney is brave, she moves on to slightly bigger ditches in trot and canter. When he over-jumps, Flora uses her neckstrap to stay with the movement. Barney finishes with a bank and looks very pleased with himself!

Flora Harris 29 Feb 2012 Hi BQM, in answer to your question it totally depends on the horse you are riding and his natural aptitude and attitude for cross country. A horse like Barney who seemed to be super brave and really took to his first session I would aim to take a minimum of 3 times, maybe more. Some people may feel this is a lot but personally I feel repetition builds confidence and I would certainly be happier going cross country on a horse who knew their job and was happy and confident in their work. I have a number of horses in my string who I still regularly take cross country schooling event though they are higher up the levels just to keep them really focussed and on the ball for that phase. If you think about how much dressage and show jumping we all do in preparation for an event it normally hugely out weighs our cross country preparation: this is something I believe we should try to balance out more whilst of course bearing in mind any unnecessary wear and tear on their legs. I hope that this helps.
Flora Harris 29 Feb 2012 Thanks for your comment VickiF!
BQM 28 Feb 2012 How many times roughly do you take them XC schooling before an event?
VickiF 23 Feb 2012 Brilliant video, thanks Flora and HH! Really good tips for early learning xc!
Flora Harris 21 Feb 2012 Hi BQM, Thank you for your comment. Establishing a strong lower leg position takes a lot of practice and hard work! I still spend plenty of time trying to improve mine! Making sure you are relaxed through the hips and knee, this helps to keep you more secure without jamming your leg on the horse in a false and hard way. Good Luck!
