About this video

The young Wavavoom combines dressage with breeding duties at Lynne Crowden's Woodlander Stud in Wales. Lynne gives Fiona Price an eye-opener into how semen collection and insemination are performed which, Lynne says, "is an extreme sport". Everyone is at risk during collection and Lynne's husband Dave, who is armed with an artificial vagina, is dressed for the part! The dummy is meant to be desirable and the 'teasing wife' is "a bit of a sexpot", says Lynne, as she is not even in season! Voom performs and Dave rushes off to 'extend the semen' before showing Fiona how he inseminates it into the waiting mare, who will receive half a billion sperm!

Hammer 30 Jan 2011 Fantatic video and so informative. Just curious if the mare shown did actually end up in foal?
Horseyvix 2 Aug 2010 Wow, amazing, what an insight!
Bri 25 Jun 2010 In response to Woodlander, I applaude you. If only everyone involved in the breeding world was as loving, caring and professional as you all are at your stud, what a better place it would be for horses.
woodlander 23 Jun 2010 It has been amazing for us too, watching what we do regularly, captured on film. It did occur to me that we were somewhat lighthearted and dismissive about it, even as we described the process. I think the whole thing underlines the willingness of horses to work with people and be trained, if they are trained in the right way. The technically knowledgeable ones amongst you will see that we cope, not next year I hope, with no stocks to hold the mare still, as does the vet when he comes to do all the scanning. The training from Twemlows was excellent and while it would be, in principle, possible for everyone to collect and inseminate it would be really ill advised without training. Care and cleanliness are imperative but, in the end, like everything with horses, you need to love doing it and love your horses.
Adastra 22 Jun 2010 Wavavoom indeed! Wonderful video, which I'll enjoy showing to my non-horsey dinner guests if the conversation flags! Thanks to all concerned for a totally engrossing 12 minutes.
