Kate Baldwin is Laura Bechtolsheimer's head girl. Using a 'Bectholsheimer baby' Kate demonstrates the art of plaiting a tail. She swiftly creates a perfect plait and finishes it off with a neatly stitched loop. The braid creates a very impressive rear-end that would make an impact in any showing ring, out hunting or at a competition! It helps that her well-behaved model has a fabulous full tail to start with! Kate explains her technique to Fiona Price and offers some useful advice.

How to plait a tail

Your horse needs an unpulled tail in order to plait it.

Wash your horse's tail a couple of days before plaiting and avoid using any 'show sheen', so it's not slippery.

Tie your horse up or have someone hold him for you.

Prepare a needle and thread for later and have some elastic bands available (the thread should be the same colour as the horse's tail).

Fiona Price 23 May 2011 Kate didn't go into detail, but having seen the horses up close at the yard, it looks like they just take the sides off at the top of the tail on both sides to give the appearance of a slight indentation.

Nikikolas 23 May 2011 I don't understand what Kate meant and how you would cut the tail either side at the top. Can you elaborate on that please? Thanks
